Taranaki

Although Maori did not develop an alphabet type of reading and writing until after the white man came, they had a highly developed reading and writing style within carving. Today people can read A B C, but the art of reading carving is still alive.

Each tribe or area has a distinctive style and this light-catcher has adapted some of the components of the Taranaki style. That is, the forehead shows the connection to Mt Taranaki, the sinewy form of the body and the arm coming through the mouth are all typical features.
