About This Piece
My daughter attended Ngaio School and this piece was inspired by their crest which is the rope in the centre and represents the hills and valleys of Ngaio as well as the strength and bonds that are achieved by bringing together many small strands.
I refer to this light-catcher as a Maori Yin Yang whereby the two koru represent a balance of life & death, beginning & end, light & dark etc. and the rope represents the strength and unity required in all things.
On another level the design also represents the important components of a Maori Whakapapa and the connection to a tribe’s Mountain, their land (the hills and valleys) and their water (Lake, harbour or river).
