About This Piece
It is believed that the hei-matau and many other fish-like amulets were worn as talismans during fishing expeditions. For Māori, the Hei-matau represents strength, determination, peace, prosperity and good health.
The Manaia is an ancient mythical being with a bird's head and human form — a messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of spirits.
Blended together, the Manaia enhances the talisman properties of the Hei-matau.
