About This Piece
In Māori tikanga, a whare represents an ancestor (tipuna) with carvings of ancestors against wall supports connected to rafters and the ridgepole — the spine and ribs of the ancestor.
This piece represents the connection between the Maunga (Mt Taranaki) and the Whare Nui. It was an awful lot of grinding work and was never repeated.
